We're saving the lives of wolves, but we need your help. Please make a tax-deductible donation now.

Out of Harm's Way: Support Defenders' Wolf-Saving Programs

Defenders' pioneering programs are keeping wolves out of harm's way.

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

In the coming months, hundreds of wolves could be killed in the Northern Rockies -- some from ongoing hunting seasons. Others will be gunned down by state or federal agents -- a deadly sentence funded by taxpayer dollars.

The future of wolves in the American West is at stake -- but Defenders' pioneering work is making a difference for these magnificent animals.

Please help secure a lasting future for wolves by supporting the expansion of our proven, on-the-ground work to keep wolves -- and livestock -- out of harm's way.

It's about keeping wolves away from livestock -- using fencing, guard dogs, range riders and other non-lethal methods -- and it's proven to be effective. We know for a fact that where our projects are deployed, wolf lives are saved. Where they are not, tragedy is likely to ensue.

Such a tragedy played out just last month in Idaho. After wolves were suspected of killing livestock, three young wolves were shot from the skies by federal Wildlife Services agents.

Help prevent future tragedies. Please donate now to ensure a lasting future for wolves in the American West -- and protect the wildlife and wild places you care about.

For more than a decade, Defenders has been working on the ground with federal, state and local officials, biologists and ranchers to keep wolves out of harm's way. But in these difficult times, we need your help to fund these urgent, wolf-saving projects.

Your donation will help fund projects that work. Defenders' efforts in Idaho's Wood River Valley have helped keep livestock in the Sawtooth National Forest safe -- and the wolves that live there out of harm's way.

Each year, more than 10,000 sheep graze in the heart of wolf habitat in the Wood River Valley. During the last four years, only a handful of sheep were lost to wolves where Defenders' programs were implemented.

These pioneering programs are just part of Defenders' work to ensure wolves are an enduring part of the American West -- and caring people like you are making a powerful difference.

Please donate now to save the lives of wolves in the Northern Rockies.

Our work to save wolves in the American West is uniquely ambitious -- and so is our goal. We need to raise $75,000 by midnight Friday to ensure we can continue this vital work to save the lives of wolves and other wildlife.

Wildlife Supporter, if just 100 people from give as little as $15 or more, we can easily reach our goal. Will you help?

Together, we can ensure a lasting future for wolves in the American West.

Jamie Rappaport Clark

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
Executive Vice President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Please support our wolf-saving work today on our secure website. Or call 1-800-385-9712 to donate by phone.

Defending Wolves

Young Idaho Wolf (www.defenders.org) Thanks to the help of Defenders supporters like you, hundreds of thousands of people saw our latest ads in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming -- helping to inform, educate and shift negative public opinion in the region.

More than 70,000 supporters have spoken out against Wyoming's Obama administration-supported plan that allows wolves to be shot-on-sight on our national forests.

But there is much more work to be done. We continue to advocate with state and federal officials on behalf of sound, science-based wolf management and sensible approaches to manage wildlife.

We're expanding our work with ranchers and livestock producers in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming to reduce conflicts and save the lives of wolves and livestock alike.

And as wolves begin to reclaim their native homes in Oregon and Washington, we're working with ranchers, state and local officials and reaching out to the public to ensure these amazing animals thrive.

None of this work is possible without the caring support of people like you. Please donate now to ensure that our work to protect wolves continues.

Fwd: Stop an oily wasteland for seals

Subject: Stop an oily wasteland for seals

Take Action to Protect the World's Oceans

Dear Anne,

Keep Oil Out
of Seals' Homes

Our government wants to let oil companies drill in the middle of seals' homes.

Please donate $30 today to help us fight back »

Click to donate

Right now, Shell and other oil companies are laying the groundwork to start drilling – right in the middle of seal feeding grounds.

If we don't act, the Arctic waters where seals and their pups hunt and swim could become a wasteland, covered in oil. And if that oil gets on a seal's coat, it can destroy its ability to insulate from the cold, even causing the seal to freeze to death.

It's clear that drilling in the Arctic – and the inevitable oil spill it would bring – could have devastating consequences for seals and the other wildlife who call it home. And even the Coast Guard agrees it would be nearly impossible for Shell to clean up a spill in the remote, icy waters.

That's why we're not giving up the fight to stop this offshore drilling. But we need your help to keep up the fight in the courtroom, in the halls of Congress, and all the way to the White House.

The future of the Arctic is hanging in the balance. That's why we are looking for 18 more donors from your state by October 6 – can we count on you? »

Each summer, healthy seals, whales, and other animals migrate to the Arctic. And at that exact moment, oil companies will start to drill. Shell says that they can clean up 95% of any Arctic oil spills and our government is taking their word for it – even though a recent leak at a Shell platform dumped over 50,000 gallons into the North Sea and they hardly cleaned up a drop.

And if Shell can't clean up their oily mess, the job falls to the Coast Guard. Their nearest response center is more than a thousand miles away and, according to government experts, tools like skimmers and booms don't work in the Arctic. There is no reliable and proven cleanup plan for an Arctic oil spill.

With your help, we're fighting to stop further lease sales to oil companies, rally activists to put pressure on government regulators, and demand that our government requires tested and proven oil spill response plans – before any drilling can begin.

This fight is too important to lose. Please donate $30 today to help us protect our oceans »

I hope I can count on you to stand with us.

Tatiana Marshall
